1. This view of the sacraments may be part of the reason that the Catholic Church has covered up sexual abuse by the clergy: as duly ordained priests, their sacraments still “worked” even if they abused children. If their sacramental work, the very core of their job, was still valid, why not save the church embarrassment by covering up their misbehavior? Conversely, in 2020 a Catholic priest watching a video of his baptism discovered that the priest who had baptized him had said “We baptize you” instead of “I baptize you.” That mistake in the formula rendered his baptism null and void according to his bishop, which meant that none of the other sacraments he had received were valid, including his ordination, which meant none of the sacraments he had performed were valid, including baptisms (at least potentially), absolutions through the sacrament of reconciliation (i.e., penance or confession), marriages, and so on.
